Double Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu has announced his retirement from competitive figure skating at the age of 27.

The Japanese superstar, who in 2018 became the first male skater to win back-to-back Olympic titles in over half a century, said he intends to pursue a professional career.

Hanyu, who is also a two-time world champion, finished fourth at the Beijing Games earlier this year, after falling in his attempt to become the first skater to land a quadruple axel in competition.
