Bruno Fernandes insists Man Utd ‘don’t need to save anyone’s job’
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes said the players “don’t need to save anyone’s job” after they fought back from 2-0 down against Roma to win 3-2 and halt a nine-game winless run.
United’s struggles on and off the pitch this season have seen them slide to 17th in the Premier League, above the relegation zone on goal difference, while they had lost two of their first three Champions League games.
Manager Michael Carrick has come under increasing pressure and his future looked bleak as they trailed 2-0 to Roma at half-time at Old Trafford, before Fernandes converted a twice-taken penalty and Matheus Cunha’s double snatched victory before the Brazilian’s stoppage-time dismissal.
Asked if this win had saved the manager’s job, Fernandes told Prime Video: “No, we don’t need to save anyone’s job.
“The club needed that win, the players needed that win. We have been working so hard to get out of this situation all together.
“It’s been tough, there’s been a lot of speculation in the media. A lot of lies around many things that have happened between me and the manager, that we have cleared the air, then after that the manager took the decision to put me on the bench because I’m not performing.
“Everyone thought that was a punishment for the words that I had. If it was, it was right. The manager is the one who makes the decisions.
“It doesn’t change the belief I have of the manager and the staff and every player in this club. It doesn’t change my aim to win every game that I have ahead of me.”
United next face Aston Villa at home in the Premier League on Sunday and Fernandes is hoping their comeback win over Roma can kickstart their season and lift their fans.
“They’ve been used to seeing this club at the top, winning trophies, winning games every week and for them it’s been so frustrating to see the club in this situation,” he added.
“But I just want to make everyone aware that we are frustrated at the moment and we all want to get out of this and hopefully this win today gives the start of something good for us.”
