Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani has died at the age of 93, his foundation has announced.

In a brief statement, it said he passed away at his home in Rome “surrounded by his loved ones”. Valentino, known globally by his first name, was one of the defining figures of modern couture, famed for his red‑carpet gowns and the signature shade known as “Valentino red”.

His career spanned more than half a century, dressing royalty, Hollywood stars and some of the world’s most influential women.

Tributes from across the fashion industry are expected in the coming hours.
