Andrew Scott’s Elsinore leads British Independent Film Awards nominations
Elsinore, which stars Andrew Scott, is leading this year’s nominations for the British Independent Film Awards with 12 nods.
Directed by Simon Stone, the film follows the story of Chariots Of Fire actor Ian Charleson as he prepared to play Hamlet at the National Theatre in the final months of his life, while seriously ill with Aids. Last month it had its world premiere as the Opening Night Gala of the BFI London Film Festival. Some of the awards it has been nominated for include British independent film, best director for Stone, best screenplay, lead performance for Scott and supporting actor for Billie Piper. It has also been nominated in categories for casting, cinematography, costume design, editing, make-up and hair design, original music, and production design. The Bifa nominations were announced by previous winners Jay Lycurgo and Posy Sterling. Cleo Barnard’s I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning earned eight nominations. The film stars Anthony Boyle, Joe Cole, Daryl McCormack, Lola Petticrew and Lycurgo as five childhood friends who “confront their unfulfilled dreams in the midst of the UK housing crisis”. Its nominations came in categories including British independent film, director and screenplay. Ashley Walters’ feature directorial debut Animol followed with seven nominations. The Top Boy actor’s film stars Tut Nyuot, Vladyslav Baliuk, Stephen Graham and Sharon Duncan-Brewster and follows two teenagers in a young offender institution. The Welsh-language film Effi O Blaenau and Queen At Sea each also received six nominations. Tender Loving Care – which director Mike Leigh has said is “most likely” his last film – was also nominated for four awards, including best director. The seven-time Academy Award nominee’s film has been described as an examination of “the complexities of aging, family, and learning to embrace life’s inevitable changes”. Other actors recognised in the lead performance category include Juliette Binoche for Queen At Sea, Erin Doherty for Faith, Leisa Gwenllian for Effi o Blaenau, Jonathan Jules for Florid and Tut Nyuot for Animol. Alongside Piper, the nominees for best supporting performance include Claire Foy for Ink, Anna Calder-Marshall and Tom Courtenay for Queen At Sea, Sekou Diaby for Animol and Bill Pullman for Everybody Digs Bill Evans. The other best director nominees are Andrew Haigh for A Long Winter and Mark Jenkin for Rose Of Nevada. The best feature documentary nominees are All Rivers Spill Their Stories To The Sea, Everybody To Kenmure Street, One In A Million, Something Familiar, and We, The Hated. The British Independent Film Awards winners will be announced in two parts. The craft winners will be announced on Bifa’s social media channels on November 24, while the other categories will be announced at the Bifa ceremony on December 6 at London’s Roundhouse.
