Saturday’s football briefing: Madueke makes Arsenal switch and Man Utd agree Mbeumo deal
Noni Madueke said Arsenal are ready to win all major honours after completing his £48million move from Chelsea.
Bryan Mbeumo is on the verge of joining Manchester United from Brentford, while Spain are through to the semi-finals of Euro 2025.
Madueke targets silverware with Arsenal
Arsenal’s £48million arrival Noni Madueke said his new club are capable of winning it all after leaving Chelsea to become Mikel Arteta’s fourth signing of the summer.
Madueke’s controversial move across London, which provoked a backlash from some Arsenal supporters, takes the club’s spending to beyond £120million so far.
Madueke said: “I’m somebody who goes with my gut feeling a lot of the time and I feel like it’s steered me in the right direction so far. So I don’t think it’s going to be any different here. I think it’s going to be a great success and I’m really happy to be here.
“It’s already a great team with a clear identity and I can’t wait to bring my style to the team and try and help the boys as much as possible to take that next step. (I want) to win all the competitions we’re in, I feel like we’re definitely capable of doing that.”
Brentford accept United offer for Mbeumo
Manchester United have finally reached an agreement with Brentford to sign Bryan Mbeumo, the PA news agency understands.
Six weeks after seeing their first offer rebuffed, Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils have sealed terms with the Bees to sign the 25-year-old forward.
United are set to pay £65million for Mbeumo, with Brentford reportedly in line for a further £6m in potential add-ons.
The Cameroon international is set to become the Premier League club’s second major summer signing after Brazil international Matheus Cunha arrived from Wolves in a £62.5million deal last month.
Frank holds fire on title prediction
Thomas Frank said he is not ready to set a deadline on when Tottenham will win the Premier League.
Spurs claimed Europa League success in May to end a 17-year wait for silverware, but chairman Daniel Levy dismissed Ange Postecoglou after a difficult domestic campaign where the club finished one place above the relegation zone.
Levy then made the bold claim last month that Tottenham “need” to win the title.
And in his first press conference as Spurs boss, Frank said: “I share his ambitions for the club. A club of this size should have that ambition.
“How far away we are is probably very difficult to say, but we should throw it forward and go for it.”
Spain roll over Swiss to reach last four
Spain are through to the semi-finals of the Women’s Euro 2025 following a 2-0 win over Switzerland at the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern.
The world champions were huge favourites to progress to the last four at the expense of the hosts, but had to wait until the 66th minute for their breakthrough.
Substitute Athenea del Castillo scored Spain’s opener before Claudia Pina’s 20-yard strike only five minutes later ensured Spain will now face either France or Germany for a place in the final.
What’s on today?
Germany face France in the concluding quarter-final of Women’s Euro 2025. The winner will take on Spain for a place in the showpiece.
