Rangers boss Danny Rohl linked with RB Salzburg switch

Reports in Germany claim the clubs have already been in contact

Rangers head coach Danny Rohl has reportedly been targeted for the vacant position at RB Salzburg.

Reports in Germany claim the clubs have already been in contact over the 37-year-old, who is preparing for his first pre-season in Scotland.

The Rangers board publicly backed Rohl after a run of four consecutive league defeats ended their title challenge and sparked doubts over the German among fans.

The former Sheffield Wednesday manager had got Rangers back into the William Hill Premiership title race after a slow start to the season under Russell Martin.

But their post-split collapse – coupled with two cup defeats to Martin O’Neill’s Celtic – has left Rohl needing to prove himself to the Rangers support.

Rohl has worked within the Red Bull stable before, beginning his coaching career under the tutelage of Ralf Rangnick at RB Leipzig and working as assistant to Ralph Hasenhuttl.

There are also connections between Red Bull and the Rangers ownership group.

The soft drinks firm has a minority stake in Leeds, which is controlled by 49ers Enterprises, a key part of the American consortium that took over at Ibrox 12 months ago.

Leeds and RB Salzburg have done business on several occasions, even before Red Bull bought into the Elland Road club two years ago. Former Salzburg head coach Jesse Marsch moved from Leipzig to Leeds in the summer of 2022 and signed Brenden Aaronson, Rasmus Kristensen and Max Wober from the Austrian club.

Speaking after the season ended last month, Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh said: “We believe that Danny gives us the best chance to win the league next year.”

Cavenagh pinpointed a pre-season under Rohl and a squad revamp that focused on “chemistry and leadership and steel and footballing IQ”.

The Light Blues quickly moved to sign Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland.

Salzburg are looking for a replacement for Daniel Beichler after a disappointing season which saw them finish third in the Austrian Bundesliga and 32nd in the Europa League, one place above Rangers. The 37-year-old was sacked on May 18 after just three months in charge.
