Police are to investigate head injuries sustained by teenager

The incident happened in Barnsley on Saturday

Police said they will investigate how a 16-year-old boy suffered head injuries when he was struck by a baton as officers responded to trouble between football fans.

A video shared online showed how it sparked an angry reaction from witnesses who saw the incident after the Barnsley vs Sheffield Wednesday game on Saturday.

It showed a ginger-haired youth with a cut on his head and blood on the pavement, as bystanders remonstrated with the officers.

South Yorkshire Police said officers were responding to trouble outside the Transport Interchange.

Match commander Chief Superintendent Sarah Poolman said: "A full open investigation, including extended video footage, will take place to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the actions which led to a 16-year-old boy sustaining a head injury from an officer's baton and an officer being assaulted, sustaining injuries to his stomach and head.
