King's Cross station closed all weekend for engineering work

It is part of the £1.2 billion East Coast upgrade

London King's Cross railway station is closed all weekend as part of a £1.2 billion engineering project.

It is only the second planned shutdown of all lines between the station and Peterborough in two decades, Network Rail said.

There are no trains in either direction on the East Coast Main Line line south of Peterborough, including to Stevenage, while engineers upgrade signalling systems.

Services run by LNER, Grand Central, Great Northern, Hull Trains and Thameslink are affected.

Passengers are being urged not to travel, and those who do are advised to allow "significantly more time for their journeys" as alternative routes and rail replacement buses are expected to be "incredibly busy".

The station will also close on the weekend of February 29 and March 1 for further work.
