Donald Trump’s relationship with wrestling is focus of new documentary

US President Donald Trump’s relationship with the world of wrestling will be examined in a new Channel 4 documentary.

Wrestling With Trump, hosted by Munya Chawawa, will follow the comedian as he travels to the United States to explore how World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has influenced Mr Trump and his politics. The one-off documentary will also examine the relationship between wrestling and politics beyond Mr Trump’s presidency, looking at the lasting impact of using disbelief for entertainment on American culture. Mr Trump has been a fan of the sport for many years having hosted two of its annual WrestleMania events in his Trump Plaza hotel, been an active participant in several shows, and a friend of WWE owner Vince McMahon. The documentary will see Chawawa, 33, meet wrestling superstars including Brutus Beefcake, real name Edward Harrison Leslie, who will discuss his relationship with the president including attending dinners together during WrestleMania. Sam Nunberg, a former campaign adviser to the president, will also offer his insight as he examines how the showmanship and spectacle of wrestling has influenced Mr Trump’s political campaigning style. Elsewhere, retired wrestler Marc Copani will discuss his controversial Arab wrestling character Muhammad Hassan, who was introduced to the WWE after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Chawawa will also spend time with a group of independent wrestlers as he explores the concept of kayfabe – an audience’s deliberate suspension of disbelief for entertainment. The comedian will speak to wrestlers including “Handsome” Beau James about this notion, which James believes to have greatly influenced American public life and been harnessed by Mr Trump and many other political figures. The documentary will also address how the blurred lines between performance and reality impacts politics, as Chawawa suggests that the influence of wrestling has contributed to Mr Trump’s rise to presidency. Chawawa said: “In 2026, it feels like we’re all living under the enormous, eclipsing shadow of Donald Trump. “At every moment of every day, we know what he’s doing, but so often – we’re left asking why. My theory is: wrestling – as in ‘sweaty men in tiny hotpants’ wrestling. “This documentary was the ultimate bittersweet adventure that interprets one of the most contentious men on the planet, through the lens of my fondest childhood nostalgia. “It’s equal parts crushing and compelling, to know the body slams and bombastic smack talk we all enjoyed growing up, may have actually been creating a strategic blueprint for the President of the United States. You have to see it to believe it.” Shaminder Nahal, Channel 4’s head of specialist factual, said: “What’s so exciting about this film is the way Munya Chawawa examines Donald Trump through a new and unexpected lens – wrestling – at a time when every day brings dramatic, often shocking world events. “With his unique perspective and knowledge, Munya delivers a surprising take on the intersection of politics and popular culture we see today, and in this bold and entertaining film, he uncovers surprising truths about performance, belief and modern political life.” Wrestling With Trump will air on Channel 4 on Tuesday May 12 at 10pm.
