Call charges to the 101 service are to be scrapped

Previously calls were charged at 15p

Calls to the 101 police number are set to become free as charges are scrapped.

From Wednesday, members of the public should not have to pay to call the non-emergency phone number which is used to report crime and speak to police forces, the Home Office said.

Callers have been charged 15p a time.

The department warned "small operators" will still charge for people to phone the service but has urged those companies to refund customers.
