Best-selling author makes case for wealth tax in special edition of Big Issue

A best-selling author handed control of the Big Issue this week is making the case for a wealth tax to tackle inequality.

Gary Stevenson assembled a team of academics, economists and campaigners to write in a special edition of the magazine.

The YouTube star and author, who has been linked with becoming an economic adviser to Andy Burnham, said: “I really want Burnham to be good. Because if he is not, then Nigel Farage will win the next election.

“Even if we just talk about the economy and inequality, Farage is going to cut taxes on the rich and it’s going to be devastating for living standards.

“Where are you, Labour? Where are you in the conversation?”

Stand-up comedian Barry Ferns, French-American economist Gabriel Zucman and Patriotic Millionaires director Rebecca Gowland are among the names contributing to Stevenson’s edition.

– The special edition of the Big Issue is on sale from vendors across the UK this week.
