Human egg cells grown from earliest stage to maturity in laboratory
Human egg cells have been grown in the laboratory from their earliest stage of development to the point at which they are ready to be fertilised, for the first time.
The egg cells were removed from ovary tissue at their earliest stage of development.
The findings, printed in a report for Molecular Human Reproduction, could be used to safeguard girls' fertility ahead of cancer treatment, as well as in fertility research elsewhere.
