Unions are calling for urgent action to tackle the ongoing cost-of-living crisis amid “spiralling” household bills.

Unions are calling for urgent action to tackle the ongoing cost-of-living crisis amid “spiralling” household bills.

The TUC said its research showed that families are paying almost £3,000 extra in average bills each year compared with five years ago.

The union organisation said a serious plan was needed to improve household incomes and put working people back at the heart of growth.

The TUC suggested a social energy tariff to help lower and middle income households with their bills as well as more support for young people, families, and the poorest households, funded by increasing the bank surcharge and increasing capital gains tax.

TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said: “From austerity to the pandemic to energy shocks and Trumpflation, working people have borne the brunt of crisis after crisis.

“Eye-watering bill rises have hammered household budgets, squeezing consumer spending. That’s being felt on high streets up and down the country, holding our economy back.

“The Chancellor needs a serious plan to put working people at the heart of growth, raising living standards so Britain can afford to spend.

“That means shielding households from punishing energy spikes and putting more money in workers’ pockets.

“Sustained action is needed to offer people breathing space – and we’re clear who should pay for it.

“While working people have been up against it, big banks and the super-rich have cashed in. It’s time for the wealthiest to pay their fair share.”

The TUC said “spiralling” mortgage, loan, energy and water bills have left many households spending an average £2,792 extra a year – or £13,960 – since 2021.
