Half of nurses say staffing shortage is affecting patient care

Around half of nurses say shifts do not have the level of nurses planned and 53% say the shortage is compromising the care given to patients.

That's according to a survey by the Royal College of Nursing which has highlighted cases of patients dying alone in hospital and staff leaving work 'sobbing' at the impact of shortages on patient care.

The majority (71%) report that their most recent daytime shift exceeded NICE guidelines, which say more than eight patients to a nurse should be seen as a 'red flag'.

Among those who raised concerns about staffing levels, 44% say no action was taken.
